Job Vacancy - Bandrum Nursing Home - Social Enterprise Cafe Manager

Bandrum Nursing Home, one of the biggest homes in Scotland, provides specialist adult care and care for the elderly with 24 hour full time nursing care in our beautiful purpose built home, set in 19 acres of land. With 83 beds over two buildings the same complex, we have 6 units providing care for residents with a range of support needs.   

Due to expansion and the building of a new café within our new unit, there is an exciting opportunity for someone to join the team in the position of Enterprise Café Manager.

The Café sits below the luxury unit 'Hilltop View' that caters for elderly frail clients. The main aim of the cafe is to provide a place for residents, staff and wider local community to bring their loved ones for refreshments and entertainment, providing them a place away from everyday life.

The café will be multi-purpose providing cafe services, a place for activities within the home and be available for the local community to use.

The Café Manager will be responsible for managing the running of the café, its staff and volunteer team, organising events whether that be for Bandrum, or external bookings from within the community. The role will initially be part time, around 20 hours a week, however as the café grows and evolves this will become a full time position.  Some flexibility around evening and weekend working is required to ensure the smooth running of events.

This is a hands on position that requires a frequent presence in the café, ensuring the Café becomes a thriving social enterprise demonstrable through increased income, profile and customer loyalty.

Responsibilities include:

Day to day management of the cafe and the team.

Deliver effective pricing strategies that enable the café to be competitive and have healthy profit margins on sales.

Ensure that menus and products are continually and creatively developed with the team so that the café thrives.

Ensure the café’s profile is developed within the local community though marketing, social media and effective communication and contribution to the production of new marketing material.

Build and sustain strong partnerships to identify and develop opportunities and profile building, opening hours and events.

Manage costs within budget, ensure efficient administrative and financial processing and contribute to business planning, reporting, budgeting and forecasting.

Ensure the café remains a key provision within Bandrum’s portfolio.

Scheduling rotas and managing leave requests and cover.

Working alongside our management team you will be responsible for ensuring appropriate training and development, scheduling and managing volunteering opportunities within the café space.

  • Establish and nurture links externally and with the wider hospitality, college/schools and local business sector and build reputation as an excellent training café.

  • Create and maintain an enabling, positive and inclusive learning environment for all trainees.

  • Ensure compliance with organisational policies and procedures in accordance with legislation.

  • Improving financial performance and where appropriate applying for available funding.

  • Encourage the local community to use the cafe and link with communities out with the home.

To be successful in this position you will have the following attributes:

  • Experience of managing a café / restaurant or other catering establishment with a proven track record of building income.

  • Ideally you will have experience of the voluntary sector and workings of social enterprise.

  • Ability to motivate, inspire and energise teams to achieve successful outcomes.

  • Confidence to make decisions and take ownership.

  • Training and/or qualifications in food standard regulations and to hold or obtain Food Safety Level 3 certificate.

  • Experience of monitoring and recording waste, Environmental Health, health and safety and quality control systems, in a commercial catering setting.

  • Enthusiastic and influential communication skills, capable of building beneficial and positive networks.

  • Competent use of MS Word, Excel, Outlook, databases and social media.

  • Sound knowledge of Health and Safety issues and safeguarding procedures to ensure a safe environment is provided for members, staff, volunteers, supporters and visitors.

  • Any knowledge of local and national food and drink trends and an active interest in catering and catering education sectors would be an advantage, along with an interest in social enterprise, Adults or Elderly requiring care and education/employment issues.

As you will be working with vulnerable adults and young people; a satisfactory enhanced disclosure from the Disclosure Scotland is required.
